Many heavy vehicles and large trailers require this Heavy Combination Licence, including semi-trailers and truck-trailer combinations. It licences you to drive a motor vehicle over four point five tons GVM towing a trailer with more than nine tons GVM. The vehicle combination may also be used for long-haul freight and commercial logistics.

  • A prime mover towing a single semi-trailer or a heavy rigid vehicle towing a trailer over 9t GVM.
  • A specially constructed vehicle or truck-trailer unit designed for heavy loads.
  • You need a class heavy combination licence to drive vehicle combinations designed for high-capacity transport or industrial use.

Note: You may also operate trailers with more than 9t GVM using this class.

To apply for your Heavy Combination class licence, you must:

  • Must have held a class MR or HR for at least one year.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Provide primary proof of identification prior to course commencement.
  • Be able to drive a truck with a manual transmission.
