LR Licence Brisbane

Build the skills and confidence to drive a Light Rigid vehicle with practical LR licence training from Global Driver Training.
An LR licence allows you to drive a class C vehicle as well as a bus or truck—including a prime mover or mobile crane—up to 8 tonnes gross vehicle mass (GVM). You may also tow a trailer with a maximum GVM of 9 tonnes, subject to the vehicle’s towing limits and other road rules.
Whether you need an LR licence for a small truck, minibus, motorhome or work vehicle, our experienced instructors will tailor your training to your current ability and prepare you for safe, confident driving.
LR lessons start from $125 per hour. Full packages start from $560, subject to terms and conditions.

What Is an LR Licence?

LR stands for Light Rigid. It is a heavy vehicle licence class for drivers who need to operate vehicles larger than those covered by a standard class C car licence.
In Queensland, an LR licence covers class C vehicles and qualifying buses or trucks with a GVM of no more than 8 tonnes. GVM means the maximum permitted weight of the vehicle when fully loaded, as specified by the manufacturer.
An LR licence may suit you if you plan to drive:
  • A small rigid delivery truck
  • A minibus or community transport vehicle
  • A qualifying motorhome
  • A light commercial truck for a trade or local business
  • Another bus or truck with a GVM of no more than 8 tonnes
Vehicle models and configurations vary. Check the compliance plate or registration details to confirm the vehicle’s GVM before choosing your licence class.

What Can You Drive With an LR Licence?

Under the current Queensland licence classes, an LR licence allows you to drive:
  • Any vehicle covered by a class C licence
  • A bus or truck, including a prime mover or mobile crane, not more than 8t GVM
  • An eligible LR vehicle towing a trailer with a maximum GVM of 9t
The licence class is based on the vehicle’s specifications—not simply its appearance or model name. If the bus or truck you need to drive is over 8t GVM, you may need an MR licence or HR licence instead.

  • Mirror use and observation
  • Steering, braking and speed management
  • Vehicle positioning and turning clearance
  • Reversing and low-speed manoeuvres
  • Intersections, lane selection and traffic awareness
  • Hill starts where relevant
  • Hazard recognition and safe following distance
  • Practical test preparation and feedback
Our aim is not only to help you prepare for the assessment, but also to build the judgement and vehicle-control skills needed for real-world driving.

Can you complete an LR licence course in one day?

A one-day pathway may be possible for an eligible driver who already has suitable driving experience and can reach the required standard within the available training time. It is not the right option for everyone.
Training time depends on your experience, confidence, vehicle familiarity and the areas that need improvement. If you need more preparation, your instructor may recommend additional lessons before the practical test. Course completion does not guarantee a pass.

Manual or Automatic LR Training

The transmission used during your practical test can affect the condition recorded on your licence. The right choice depends on your current licence, your driving experience and the vehicles you expect to operate after the course.
An automatic option may suit drivers who will only use automatic fleet vehicles. A manual pathway may offer broader flexibility, depending on the training vehicle and the resulting licence condition.
Before booking, tell us:
  • What licence you currently hold
  • Whether your current licence has a transmission condition
  • What vehicle you need to drive for work or personal use
  • Whether that vehicle is manual or automatic
We will explain the training vehicle available and help you understand which option best matches your needs.
If you need to drive a heavier rigid vehicle, you can upgrade to an HR Licence in Brisbane with Global Driver Training.

What Happens During the LR Practical Driving Test?

The expected on-road test time for a Queensland LR licence is approximately 25–35 minutes, although road conditions or other events may affect the duration.
Before the test, the examiner will check that the vehicle is safe and suitable. During the drive, you will be assessed on your ability to control the vehicle, observe traffic, position it safely, follow road rules and respond appropriately to hazards and directions. The examiner will discuss the result with you after the assessment.
An LR test vehicle must be a compliant bus or truck between 4.5t and 8t GVM. A lighter vehicle cannot be used for the LR test solely because it is fitted to carry more than 12 adults.
Global Driver Training provides a test-ready vehicle, allowing you to train and complete the assessment in the same type of vehicle.

  • Your current Queensland driver licence
  • Fully enclosed, suitable footwear
  • Any required medical certificate or supporting documentation

Who Is an LR Licence For?

Tradespeople and local delivery drivers

An LR licence can provide access to small rigid trucks used for tools, materials, equipment and local deliveries.

Minibus and community transport drivers

LR may cover qualifying minibuses and community vehicles. If you plan to carry passengers as part of a public passenger service, you may also need the appropriate driver authorisation. Check the requirements for the work you intend to perform.

Motorhome owners

Some motorhomes fall within the LR vehicle class. Always check the specific vehicle’s GVM rather than relying on its size or model description.

Drivers entering the transport industry

LR can be a practical first heavy vehicle licence and may support entry-level roles in local transport, delivery and logistics. It can also form part of a longer pathway towards higher heavy vehicle classes.

Employers and work teams

Businesses can use targeted driver training to help eligible staff build safer vehicle-handling skills for their operational needs. Contact us to discuss training for an individual employee or team.

Frequently Asked Questions About LR Licence Course

What does LR stand for on a licence?

LR stands for Light Rigid. In Queensland, this licence class covers class C vehicles and qualifying buses or trucks not more than 8t GVM. It also permits a trailer with a maximum GVM of 9t, subject to the towing vehicle’s limits and applicable road rules.

How long must I hold a car licence before applying for LR?

You generally need to have held a class C provisional, probationary or open licence for at least one year. The qualifying period must meet current Queensland rules. Contact TMR if part of your licence history is interstate or overseas.

Do I need previous truck-driving experience?

No. Previous truck-driving experience is not essential if you meet the licence eligibility requirements. However, your experience and confidence will influence how much training you need before attempting the practical test.

Do I need to pass a written test?

You may need to pass the Queensland heavy vehicle road rules knowledge test before upgrading. Confirm the requirement with TMR and complete the official practice questions as part of your preparation.

How long does LR licence training take?

Training time varies. An experienced, confident driver may become test-ready within a shorter session, while someone new to larger vehicles may need additional lessons. Global Driver Training will recommend a pathway based on your current skills.

Can I get my LR licence in one day?

Some eligible and experienced drivers may be able to complete training and the practical assessment in one day, subject to availability and demonstrated competency. Additional training may be recommended, and no course can guarantee a test pass.

How much does an LR licence cost in Brisbane?

Global Driver Training’s LR lessons start from $125 per hour. Full packages start from $560 and include lessons and a driving test, subject to terms and conditions. LR vehicle hire for the test is listed at $400. Confirm current inclusions and any separate government fees before booking.

Can I drive a minibus with an LR licence?

You can drive a bus that falls within the LR vehicle specifications. Check the particular vehicle’s GVM and configuration. Separate driver authorisation may also be required for certain passenger transport work.

Can I drive a motorhome with an LR licence?

An LR licence can cover a motorhome that fits within the class specifications. Check the compliance plate or registration records to confirm its GVM. A heavier vehicle may require an MR or HR licence.

What happens if I do not pass the practical test?

The examiner will explain the outcome and areas requiring improvement. You can arrange additional training and book another test when ready. Any further lesson, vehicle-hire, booking or government fees should be confirmed before rescheduling.

Is an LR or MR licence better for me?

Choose based on the vehicle you actually need to drive. LR covers a bus or truck up to 8t GVM. MR covers a bus or truck over 8t GVM with no more than two axles and also includes LR vehicles. If you are eligible for both, consider your workplace requirements and future plans before deciding.
