Quick answer: choose the licence class that matches the heaviest and most complex vehicle you need to drive. LR covers buses and trucks not more than 8t GVM; MR and HR cover progressively larger rigid vehicles; HC covers heavy combinations; and MC covers B-doubles and road trains.
This guide compares Queensland heavy vehicle licence classes, minimum driving experience and the usual upgrade route. Licence eligibility can depend on your individual history, medical fitness and licence conditions, so confirm your eligibility before booking.
Queensland truck licence comparison
| Licence | Vehicles | Minimum previous licence | Typical work | Usual upgrade route | Possible next class |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LR | Bus or truck not more than 8t GVM | Class C for at least 1 year | Minibus, small removal truck, light delivery truck | Heavy vehicle knowledge requirements, training and TMR practical driving test | MR or, when eligible, HR |
| MR | Bus or truck over 8t GVM with no more than 2 axles | Class C for at least 1 year | Delivery, trade, waste and medium rigid trucks | Heavy vehicle knowledge requirements, training and TMR practical driving test | HR or HC when eligible |
| HR | Bus or truck over 8t GVM with more than 2 axles; also articulated buses | Class C for at least 2 years, or LR/MR for at least 1 year | Heavy rigid trucks, large buses, construction and freight vehicles | Heavy vehicle knowledge requirements, training and TMR practical driving test | HC or MC when eligible |
| HC | Heavy rigid vehicle towing a trailer over 9t GVM, including a prime mover and semitrailer | MR or HR for at least 1 year | Semitrailer, line-haul and heavy combination work | Training and TMR practical driving test | MC |
| MC | HC vehicles, B-doubles and road trains | HR or HC for at least 1 year | B-double, road train and multi-combination freight | Approved MC training pathway and TMR licence application; requirements differ for HR and HC holders | Highest heavy vehicle class |
Which licence should I choose?
- Choose LR if you need to drive a light rigid bus or truck up to and including 8t GVM.
- Choose MR for a rigid truck or bus over 8t GVM with no more than 2 axles.
- Choose HR for a rigid truck or bus over 8t GVM with more than 2 axles, or an articulated bus.
- Choose HC for a prime mover and semitrailer or another heavy combination with a trailer over 9t GVM.
- Choose MC for B-doubles, road trains and other multi-combination vehicles.
What can I drive with an HR licence?
An HR licence lets you drive vehicles in the MR class plus buses or trucks over 8t GVM with more than 2 axles. It also covers articulated buses. You may tow a trailer with a maximum GVM of 9t. It does not authorise a heavy combination with a trailer over 9t GVM; that generally requires HC.
Can I go from a car licence directly to HR?
Yes. In Queensland, you may apply for HR after holding a class C provisional, probationary or open licence for at least 2 years. Alternatively, you can qualify after holding LR or MR for at least 1 year. You must also meet the applicable knowledge, medical fitness and practical test requirements.
Can I go from HR directly to MC?
Yes. You do not have to obtain HC first. You may apply for MC after holding HR or HC for at least 1 year. An applicant upgrading from HR must complete the TLIC4006 Drive Multi-combination Vehicle unit through an approved MC training provider, including at least 16 hours of training and assessment, and present the Statement of Attainment to TMR.
Automatic vs synchromesh vs Road Ranger: what is the difference?
The vehicle used for your practical assessment can affect the transmission condition recorded for that heavy vehicle class. An A condition limits you to automatic transmission vehicles for the affected class. A B condition limits you to synchromesh gearboxes. A non-synchromesh manual—often called a Road Ranger—requires different gear-changing skills and can provide broader transmission flexibility when successfully assessed. Your conditions must always be checked on your Queensland licence.
How long must I hold each licence?
| Licence you hold | Minimum period | Licence you can apply for |
|---|---|---|
| C | 1 year | LR or MR |
| C | 2 years | HR |
| LR or MR | 1 year | HR |
| MR or HR | 1 year | HC |
| HR or HC | 1 year | MC |
The qualifying experience must have been accumulated within the 5 years before you apply. Suspended, surrendered, cancelled or expired periods do not count.
What happens during the upgrade process?
For LR, MR, HR and HC, the usual route is to confirm eligibility, meet the heavy vehicle knowledge requirements, complete practical training and pass a TMR practical driving test. MC follows a separate approved training pathway because TMR does not conduct a practical MC driving test.
